Kaopectate has not been tested or approved for use by pets. Please do not give Kaopectate to your pet or animal unless directed to do so by your veterinarian.

Please ask a health professional before using Kaopectate if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Kaopectate can be taken with or without food.

No. Kaopectate products should be stored at room temperature between 68° and 77° F.

Kaopectate products are not tested for effectiveness or safety past their expiration date; therefore, we cannot recommend using an expired product.

We do not add gluten to Kaopectate products, but we not have tested for the absence of gluten. Therefore, we cannot certify that Kaopectate products are gluten free.

Kaopectate is indicated for adults and children 12 years of age and older. Ask your doctor about use on children under 12 years of age, and keep the product out of reach of children. All Kaopectate labels include the following warning:

Reye’s Syndrome: Children and teenagers who have or are recovering from chicken pox or flu-like symptoms should not use this product. When using this product, if changes in behavior with nausea and vomiting occur, consult a doctor because these symptoms could be an early sign of Reye’s Syndrome, a rare but serious illness.

We cannot recommend using Kaopectate in any way other than what is instructed by the labeling. The safety and welfare of our customers is always our top concern; therefore, it is the policy of our company to advise all consumers to consult a physician before using any OTC product outside the directed or intended usage.

When using Kaopectate, a temporary but harmless darkening of the stool and/or tongue may occur in some people. If you are concerned about your individual health when using Kaopectate, please consult your doctor.

Please refer to each Kaopectate label for the proper dosing.

Please note that Kaopectate MAX liquid contains twice the medicine as regular Kaopectate and so the directions differ between Kaopectate MAX Peppermint liquid and the other Kaopectate liquids (available in Vanilla, Peppermint, and Cherry).

Kaopectate Caplets:

  • adults and children 12 years of age and older: 2 caplets (1 dose)
  • swallow caplets with water; do not chew
  • repeat dose every 1/2 hour to 1 hour as needed
  • do not exceed 8 doses in 24 hours
  • use until diarrhea stops but not more than 2 days
  • children under 12 years: ask a doctor
  • drink plenty of clear fluids to help prevent dehydration caused by diarrhea

Kaopectate regular Vanilla, Cherry, or Peppermint liquid:

  • shake well immediately before each use
  • only use pre-measured dose cup
  • adults and children 12 years of age and older:
  • 1 dose (30 mL) every 1/2 hour to 1 hour as needed
  • do not exceed 8 doses (240 mL) in 24 hours
  • use until diarrhea stops but not more than 2 days
  • children under 12 years: ask a doctor
  • drink plenty of clear fluids to help prevent dehydration caused by diarrhea

Kaopectate MAX Peppermint liquid:

  • shake well immediately before each use
  • only use pre-measured dose cup
  • adults and children 12 years of age and older:
    1 dose (30 mL) every hour as needed
  • do not exceed 4 doses (120 mL) in 24 hours
  • use until diarrhea stops but not more than 2 days
  • children under 12 years: ask a doctor
  • drink plenty of clear fluids to help prevent dehydration caused by diarrhea
